Reasons To Fall in Love with Asheville, NC

Have you ever thought about a getaway destination that may be a little closer to home than you may think?  Well, my husband and I have started a tradition of choosing a destination in America we’ve never been to and experiencing it together for the first time. We call these little journeys, “stayca’s”.  There is sooo much to see right here at home!  Whether it’s a trip with family, friends, or a spouse, there is great beauty in exploring together. Why not start with the places in America?  You’ve heard about them, seen them in movies and shows, and have always wanted to see them. But something has stopped you from just taking that leap and experiencing that journey. Well... I’m going to show you how amazing that could be and what lies out there ready to be explored!

For one of our first “stayca’s”, we chose Asheville, NC which could almost be in our backyard it’s so close.  Located less than two hours from Charlotte, in western North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is a city known for its vibrant arts culture and historic architecture. We both had never been to see the largest home in the U.S. and my husband is a huge fan of craft beer, so Asheville topped our list. If you didn’t know, Asheville is known as Beer City USA with over 20 craft breweries and counting yearly.

My husband (my best traveling companion) and I decided to take an overnight trip to Asheville, NC in December 2016 and have visited every year since. Check out how we typically spent our time exploring the beautiful city of Asheville. Check out some of the reasons why we LOVE Asheville and why you should plan a visit to this eclectic mountainous town. We're sharing our experience on places to eat and things to do in the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC.

TAKE IN THE SCENIC VIEWS AT NEW BELGIUM BREWERY

We are true foodies and LOVE a delicious meal. I am extremely picky, whereas the Mr. is way more open-minded than me when it comes to cuisine. And still, our dining experiences in Asheville are also something to cherish!  During our first visit to Asheville, we ate brunch at King Daddy’s Chicken and Waffles (the name says it all), which sadly is no longer open. They had the best chicken and waffle combination we’ve had in North Carolina.  The service was also stellar.  They will be truly missed. Don’t fret, Early Girl Eatery is now in their space and offers great a delightful farm-to-table southern comfort food experience. It’s definitely worth a visit.

We also enjoyed the atmosphere and the tasty BBQ at the new location of 12 Bones Smokehouse.  They’ve put their own twist on southern cuisine and it’s well worth the visit!  We enjoyed their pulled pork, chopped brisket, and a half rack of ribs!  Not a single disappointment.

You can not go wrong by grabbing a bite to eat at Nine Mile. Nile Miles serves up Caribbean-inspired pasta and rice dishes sure to satisfy the taste buds. We’ve dined at both of their locations. The original location is in the heart of Historic Montford and their newest location is in Downtown West Asheville on Haywood Rd., here you’ll enjoy a flava-packing tribute to Caribbean cuisine.  A stop at Nine Mile is a must each time we visit Asheville. My husband chose the “Cool Runnings” which at the time was the most flavor I’ve ever tasted in a dish.  It was soo good, that I ended up swapping my meal for his. I chose the “Nine Mile”, trying to stay away from mushrooms plus the menu advertised this dish as “spicy” and I love dishes that pack a punch.  It too was also delicious but it was nine miles (pun intended) away from scratching the surface of the “Cool Runnings” flavor.

Other restaurants to add to your list:

  • Tupulo Honey

  • Mayfel’s - New Orleans-inspired cuisine

  • Barley’s Taproom & Pizza

  • Marble Slab Creamery

Other breweries to check out:

  • Hi-Wire Brewery

  • New Belgium Brewery - Be sure to take a tour but if not, the grounds and drinking hall, and patio area are all gorgeous enough to sit back and take in the atmosphere. We typically sit on the patio that offers serene views of nature’s trees, creeks, and sunset while sharing a few drinks.

  • Asheville Brewing Company - We also frequently visit Asheville Brewing Company to grab some pub food and local beer. It’s always hard for us to say no to a great craft beer and pizza.  The atmosphere is completely laid back offering indoor and outdoor seating. Asheville, home to many local breweries and eateries has something for everyone. It should definitely be on your radar if you’re traveling with the family.

Where to Stay

Asheville is home to many intimate B&Bs. There are several large chain hotels as well as cozy boutique hotels to choose from within walking distance from downtown. Locations range from downtown out to the countryside offering breathtaking scenic mountain views.  The famous Biltmore Estate and The Grove Park Inn also offer luxury hotel accommodations sure to make for a remarkable stay. We’ve stayed at the Four Points By Sheraton and the Renaissance Asheville Hotel both located in Downtown Asheville and conveniently located near vibrant shops and restaurants.

Things To Do

The Biltmore Estate

The Biltmore Estate is the largest privately-owned house in the United States. This 19th-century Biltmore estate displays artwork by masters like Spanish designer Rafael Guastavino. During one visit to Asheville, we decided to visit during the Christmas season as I was told the Biltmore Estate is at its peak this time of year.  And it did not disappoint.  We were completely blown away by the beauty of the grounds and brick masonry of the Biltmore.  It was like being inside an enormously large castle that held electric elevators (which we rode), the first American bowling alley, and a weightlifting gym to name a small few.  We were completely taken away by so many of the modern touches a home built in 1896 had.  There were Christmas decorations everywhere and the largest Christmas tree I’ve ever seen was placed in the largest living space I’ve ever seen.  It was truly an unforgettable experience, but I don’t want to drift too far into everything for the sake of your own journey should you choose Asheville. Before we arrived I was told that the tours would last 2 hours.  I’d say if you plan to see all of the Biltmore, winery included, plus the exquisite gardens (the best time to visit is during the spring and summer) it’s easily an all-day affair.

Shopping

Asheville, NC offers lots of vibrant shopping experiences for all types of travelers. From the larger outlet malls to smaller boutique stores, you're sure to find the most amazing gifts and crafty items to take back home. We enjoyed the River Arts District, Biltmore Village, and Weaverville. Another great shopping experience with tons of local flare is the Asheville City Market, with locations downtown and in South Asheville. Here you’ll find all organic, homegrown, and/or handmade items. A great way to explore Asheville's downtown architecture is via the Urban Trail.

Asheville, NC truly has something for everyone. Whether you’re a solo, adventure-seeking traveler, looking for a romantic escape, or taking the family on a getaway, Asheville is sure to be a delightful experience packed with good food, good vibes, and great beer!

As you can see, so many great adventures await on staycations.  There is always a reason to travel and see and experience something new.  Whether it’s the food, a national landmark, or a place that has been on your list of sights to see, be sure to mark your calendar and take the time to pursue them.  My husband and I work tirelessly to help travelers experience something unique. Sometimes that type of uniqueness is only a few miles away.
