Getaway House Asheboro | Getting Away to Reconnect

The Getaway

Life can be challenging. Especially lately. We’ve had to take on so many new roles and responsibilities. In our case, the biggest challenge has been juggling full-time employment and operating a successful business while becoming full-time teachers and administrators due to the pandemic. We have three school-age children, who all have different needs as far as school is concerned. We successfully finished last school year as teachers and discovering that we’d be teachers again this year... well we just had to take a break before returning to remote learning and the typical hustle and bustle of life, in order to regain some level of calmness.

With the world being in the middle of a major pandemic, options for a getaway have been extremely limited. After brainstorming several options like a trip to the beach (yes they’re open), a trip to one of our favorite cities nearby with great cuisine (Charleston, SC), and renting an RV and heading to a new US destination we’ve never been to, we just couldn’t make up our minds about a getaway. That is until we discovered Getaway House.

We’ve had clients who were seeking places to go to getaway but also wanted to be safe. So, we did what we do best, research. When exploring what Getaway House was all about, we discovered these amazingly constructed small cabins designed for an isolated trip in nature to help us getaway from our connectedness to ultimately reconnect. Instead of picking up devices to connect with people, the idea is to help people to unwind, reset, and restart surrounded by all the peacefulness nature can offer. Seriously, there’s even a lockbox to place cell phones and instructions to utilize it. This was definitely something new and different which headed to the top of our getaway list. So, we booked a getaway! What better way to transparently recommend a destination or experience than to experience it first-hand for yourself.

The experience

Once our arrival date finally arrived, we happily jetted up to Asheboro, NC toward our destination, which is less than an hour from Charlotte NC. The Getaway House team is extremely thorough and efficient with communicating all the details required; from finding your cabin, a map of the grounds (other cabins) and trails, to a unique code on the door to gain access. I thought that was great and it really helped me to feel better about the security of the experience. I must admit that I was a bit skeptical about not having WIFI and limited or no cellphone service. Hey, I’ve seen a ton of scary movies about cabins in the woods so, yeah. It worked out perfectly, and we truly appreciated the disconnection from the world aka social media.

Once we arrived, my mind was completely at ease and in awe. The staff was extremely friendly (you won’t see them often because disconnecting is the mission), the grounds were nicely done and tranquil, and the cabins were mind-blowing! Each cabin had its own drive-up, fire pit (with wood and a starter log available at minimal cost), two recliner seats, a handcrafted wooden outside table, and a pale of water to put out the fire from the pit.

Each cabin is individually crafted to highlight the nature around them. Ours backed up toward a mountain filled with forest greens and the designers didn’t hesitate to feature it. The cabin had a floor to ceiling window pointed directly at that mountain which stole the show. Inside we found the entire cabin wrapped in cedar wood paneling, a dining area for two, a glass cooktop, a classic red eye-catching refrigerator, a magnetic bar holding cooking utensils, a small basket with food (if you didn’t bring your own to cook) adequately priced, and a full bathroom. There’s also a book, Getaway House written by its creator, explaining ways to find balance in our everyday life.

Getaway House is all about the love for nature and helping guests to become acclimated to accepting nature and connecting with each other. A complimentary s’mores kit was provided which had all the tools necessary to get that job done. Of course, we opened it! A map of several nearby trails is included to help you feel right at home. Unfortunately, we missed our hike but we plan to go back soon.

What’s nearby

Downtown Asheboro, located about 15 minutes away from the cabins, has tons of nice local businesses to grab food and essential needs. We enjoyed lunch at The Table Farmhouse Bakery, which I would say has the best dirty chai within 100 miles in any direction and the Hot Cuban and Club on Ciabatta was made to perfection. The atmosphere and service were equally impressive and the place looks like something Chip & Joanna Gaines designed.

We also enjoyed dessert at Bangkok Street Fare which had the best Thai rolled ice cream I’ve ever tasted (that was my first time)! It was amazing and I highly recommend the salted caramel and the red velvet flavors. Dinner at Taco Loco was delicious! The food is so authentic. The tacos (my husband’s favorite) were so good, he had eaten two before remembering to take a picture for Instagram.
